How Many Football Players Are On a Team?
In a football game, there are eleven players from each team on the field at a time. Teams also have a limited number of players on their roster, depending on the league's rules in which they compete.
At the college level, teams can have 105 players on their roster. Only 53 active players are on the roster in the NFL, with only 47 actually eligible to play on game day.
The reason for the difference in rostered players between the two leagues is that the NFL uses practice teams. Practice squads consist of players under contract with the team who only participate in practices, but they can potentially be called up to the roster.
There are also some 7-on-7 leagues where the teams consist of a Center, a Quarterback, and five other eligible receivers. Also, in flag football—a low contact version of the sport—teams can consist of 5 to 9 players, depending on the league.
