Get the size right first

Most kids play with a ball that's too big. Before any brand comparison, match the size to the player: size 5 (27.5") for ages 8–11, size 6 (28.5") for ages 12–14 and women's play at every level, and size 7 (29.5") for boys 15+ and men's play. A right-sized ball builds proper shooting form; an oversized one teaches kids to heave from the shoulder.

1. Eco Sports Indoor Basketball — 27.5" (Best overall for ages 8–11 — our own ball)

Yes, it's ours — and it's the ball we'd buy anyway. The thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) cover grips well even with small or sweaty hands, holds up on driveways as well as gym floors, and uses no animal leather. It ships deflated in flat packaging, so keep a pump handy. See it here (choose the 27.5" size).

2. Eco Sports Indoor Basketball — 28.5" (Best for ages 12–14 — our own ball)

The same TPU build in the intermediate size. This is also the official women's size, so a 13-year-old who falls in love with the game never has to re-learn her shot. See it here (choose the 28.5" size).

3. Eco Sports Green Basketball — 27.5" (Best gift)

Same ball, unmistakable green colorway. It's the one that never gets mixed up at the park, and the one kids pick out of the ball rack first. See it here.

4. Wilson NBA DRV Pro — 29.5" (Best outdoor ball for teens)

For a 15+ player moving up to the official men's size, the DRV Pro is the outdoor ball to beat: Wilson states its Tackskin cover contains at least 30% recycled rubber, and it's built specifically for asphalt, which eats softer covers alive. 4.5★ across thousands of Amazon ratings. Check the current price.

5. Eco Sports Indoor Basketball — 29.5" (Best for high-school-bound players)

The official men's size in our TPU build, for the teen who's outgrown the intermediate ball. See it here.

6. Eco Sports Youth Basketball on Amazon (Best if you need it in two days)

The same youth ball, fulfilled by Amazon — the right call when a birthday snuck up on you. See it on Amazon.

7. Basketball Team Pack — 10 balls (Best for coaches & leagues)

Ten balls, shipped deflated to cut freight and packaging waste. If you run a rec league or coach a school team, this is the per-ball price you want. See the team pack.

How we chose

We looked at grip, durability on outdoor surfaces, correct sizing for growing hands, materials (none of these picks use animal leather), and value. Where a manufacturer makes an environmental claim, we cite exactly what the brand states rather than making the claim ourselves.
