How to Score Pickleball & Why Is It So Confusing

How to Score Pickleball & Why Is It So Confusing

Pickleball Scoring

Pickleball is a fantastic game for all ages. It's easy to learn and can be played competitively or just for fun. In order to keep score, though, you need to know a few things. In this blog post, we'll teach you everything you need to know about scoring pickleball. By the end, you'll be an expert!

How to Score Pickleball

To start, each game of pickleball is played until one team reaches 11 points with a two-point lead over the other team - this is known as winning by 2. If the score reaches 10-10, then play continues until one team has a two-point lead. When playing competitively, matches are usually best out of 3 or 5 games.
Every time a point is scored, the serving team changes. The first team to serve is decided by a coin toss at the beginning of the match - usually it's the winners of the previous game who get to serve first in the next game. (Each courts or park have their own unique way of deciding who serves first. ie. closest to the fence, closet to the tennis net.. )

Serves alternate between sides every 2 points, and each player gets one serve before they have to switch serves with their partner. (EXCEPT THE FIRST SERVER OF THE GAME. The first server starts as the second server. Read more to understand) Serves must be delivered diagonally into the service zone - if it hits any part of the line, it's considered in. Right now you play lets but some rules you replay the point if it lets. The serve must go past the kitchen to start the point. If you're receiving serve and you successfully return the ball back over the net, then your side gets to keep volleying until someone misses. However, if you return the ball and it hits any part of the line on your opponent's side or goes out of bounds, the serving team scores a point and gets to serve again. The ball can be volleyed an unlimited number of times as long as it doesn't hit either line or go out of bounds - once those things happen then possession changes hands and someone else gets a turn at serving. You can only score points when you're serving - if your opponents are serving and they miss or hit one of the lines, then they either move to the second server or the return team then becomes the serving team. The ball must bounce before it can be hit on both sides.

That is everything you need to know about scoring pickleball. Pickleball is a great game for all ages and can be played both competitively and for fun. In order to keep score though, you'll need to understand how the game is played and what the scoring system looks like.

Scoring pickleball is easy once you understand how the game works. Just remember that points can only be scored when serving, and that volleys continue until someone misses or hits one of the lines. Keep these things in mind and you'll be keeping score like a pro in no time!
