Basketball Drills 101

Every great basketball player starts with the fundamentals. If you're new to the game, mastering these essential drills will accelerate your progress and build a strong foundation for future development. Whether you're playing pickup outdoor basketball games, joining a league, or just looking to improve your skills, these beginner-friendly drills will transform your basketball game.

1. Ball Handling Basics

Start with fundamental ball handling exercises. Practice dribbling with both hands while walking, then progress to stationary dribbling in figure-8 patterns. Focus on keeping your head up, using fingertips rather than palms, and maintaining a low center of gravity. This drill develops muscle memory for controlling the ball under pressure.

2. Shooting Form Practice

Proper shooting technique begins with foot positioning and balance. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and shoot with your dominant hand while following through with the shooting hand. Practice the "form shoot" without moving - focus on consistent mechanics before adding motion.

Start right in front of the hoop. After you make 5 take 1 step back until you reach the free throw line.

3. Passing Accuracy

Master the chest pass, bounce pass, and overhead pass. Set up targets and practice delivering passes with proper hand positioning and follow-through. Accuracy over speed in early stages builds confidence and consistency. Start close and gradually increase distance.

Hit each target 5 times with a chest pass, bounce, and overhead pass. Throw in a right handed & left handed pass for good measure.

4. Footwork and Movement

Basketball requires quick directional changes. Practice the defensive slide, crossover steps, and proper stopping techniques. These movements keep you balanced and ready for the next play. Focus on keeping your feet moving efficiently rather than standing still.

Plus these are great drills to increase coordination and stamina.

5. Catch and Shoot

This drill combines catching with immediate shooting. Have a partner pass balls to you from different angles while you practice catching with both hands and shooting immediately. It builds reaction time and shooting accuracy when under pressure.

To add more game like elements to this drill, do a 180 jump, catch up and shoot. Or run key to key on the free throw to mimic catching a live ball.

6. Defensive Stance and Slides

Develop defensive skills early with proper stance and sliding movements. Keep feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, and hands up. Practice moving laterally without losing balance, as this will serve you well in games.

They say defense wins championships, we cant skip defense!

7. Rebounding Fundamentals

Rebounding isn't just about jumping high - it's about positioning and boxing out. Practice boxing out opponents with your body, securing the ball, and immediately transitioning to your next move. Good rebounding creates second-chance opportunities.

As a guard, the only way I got rebounds was by hitting my man first then going back to the ball off the rim. Coaches love you if you know how to box out properly.

8. Three-Point Shooting

We know everyone wants to make it rain from 3. Start close to the free throw ine and gradually work back to the three point line. Focus on form consistency rather than distance. This drill builds confidence with long-range shots and develops the muscle memory needed for game situations.

We are not all Steph Curry yet. We have to earn hitting the 3's!

9. Crossover Dribble

This fundamental move allows you to change direction quickly while maintaining control of the ball. Practice crossover dribbles in place, then incorporate movement. The crossover dribble is essential for creating space and driving to the basket.

Practice two dribble right - hard cross over
two dribbles left - hard cross over until you reach the hoop to lay it in!

10. Conditioning and Endurance

Basketball requires stamina and quick bursts of energy. Incorporate sprint intervals, jumping rope, and agility ladder work into your routine. Building cardiovascular fitness will improve your performance throughout the entire game.
